Abia State government has again warned heads of government agencies against demanding or collecting bribes from civil servants for the issuance of Gen.35 promotion papers in the state’s public service.
This warning was reiterated by the State Head of Service, Onyii Wamah, who has directed permanent secretaries and heads of other government establishments to ensure the immediate refund of such monies collected from civil/public servants in the name of Gen. 35.
In a statesman signed by Adaeze Ralph Igbokwe, his Public Relations Officer, PRO , Wamah warned those who indulge in the act to desist forthwith as any civil servant caught collecting such money would face disciplinary action in line with the Public Service Rule (PSR).
A civil servant in one government establishment in Umuahia who spoke on the matter thanked the Head of Service for discovering and bursting the alleged corrupt practices by some heads of administration and other unit heads, saying Wamah has protected the interests of workers, especially the poor low cadre workers.
“It is true, the HoS is saying the truth. My brother’s files were not attended to, probably because he did not play the ball but with this warning by the HoS, my brother is hopeful of getting his Gen.35 immediately”, the female civil servant said, under anonymity.
Meanwhile, the statement by Onyi Wamah read in part,
“The number one Abia civil servant expressed disappointment that while the government is making sincere efforts to make life bearable for the workforce, some unscrupulous workers are adamant to such, describing it as unfair, wickedness and therefore unacceptable and charged permanent secretaries and heads of other establishments to daily, checkmate the activities of department and unit heads under their watch.”
It would be recalled that the Head of Service had in 2022, raised the alarm that some bad eggs in the state civil service were allegedly extorting civil servants before processing their promotion documents called Gen.35.
The ongoing promotion exercise is in the actualization of next-level promotions granted to civil servants in Abia by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu recently.
