Fuel subsidy removal: Coalition recommends public transport, other mitigation measures

The Adamawa Coalition for Good Governance has backed the decision of the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidy.

The coalition says channelling the proceeds of the policy to infrastructural development is a sound plan, but that the government needs to implement measures to mitigate the effects already weighing the masses down.

Members of the coalition articulated their position on Thursday during their monthly meeting at the Centre for Women and Adolescent Empowerment, Yola, after deliberating on the circumstances that led to the pronouncement by Mr President and the effects that increased fuel prices are having on the masses.

To cushion the effects of the subsidy removal, the group urged the government to provide vehicles that will charge commuters at reasonable rates.

The coalition also suggested the provision of filling stations that dispense fuel at controlled prices.

In the meantime, the group expressed optimism that the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy would be temporary and advised commuters to adopt cost-saving methods such as trekking short distances or doing parts of long distances on foot.
