Niger NUJ commends Gov Bago over appointment of CPS, other journalists

The Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has commended Governor Mohammed Bago for appointing a former Manager of News, Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Minna, Bologi Ibrahim. as his new Chief Press Secretary, CPS.

The union, in a statement signed by the state secretary, Comrade Usman Chiji, described the appointment of Bologi as a round peg in a round hole.

The statement said, “the appointment did not come to the union as a surprise considering the pedigree of Bologi as one of the finest and hardworking journalist who has traversed the length and breadth of Nigeria and abroad in the course of discharging his duties”.

The Union described Bologi Ibrahim as a calm, gentle and humble person who devoted his time to advancing the development of journalism and hoped that the government would create a conducive atmosphere for him to operate.

It also lauded him for appointing Aisha Wakaso of Punch Newspaper and Abdulberqy Ebbo as advisers on print media and social media, respectively, as well as Ummi Khaltume Abdullahi Kuta as the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba.

Chiji urged the trio to work closely with the new CPS to enable them effectively project the image of the Governor and also bridge the communication gap that may result in fake news or misinformation about government policies and programmes.

The state NUJ noted, “We appreciate the Governor,s humble beginning of strengthening his relationship with the media hoping that, more journalists will be appointed to assist in bringing government closer to the people.”

“We are urging all the Appointees not to betray the confidence repose on them by working for the progress of the state instead of pursuing self interest above collective.”

The union renewed its unflinching support and cooperation with the Governor for a more robust relationship between NUJ and the administration.

The statement then urged the new Governor to be open-minded in suggestions of the people for the state’s progress, as fixation with ideas without engagement is an aberration to democracy.
