We’ll discharge our responsibility without fear or favour – Niger election tribunal chair

The Chairman, Niger State Election Petition Tribunal, Justice Angela Otaluka has disclosed that the tribunal under her watch would do justice without fear or favour in the discharge of its responsibility in the state.

Justice Otaluka made the disclosure at the inaugural sitting of the six-member National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in the courtroom of High Court Number One in Minna.

She said the tribunal cannot compromise its statutory duty, assuring that it will ensure every participant and stakeholder in the election matters is given a level playing ground, within the limited time of 180 days as prescribed by law.

Justice Otaluka cautioned counsels to keep to the rules as well as maintain the highest integrity and ethical behaviour expected of them in the discharge of their duty.

“On no account should anybody, including staff, relatives, friends and counsels be deceived or under [any] pretext accept any gratification or compromise in any form,” she warned, urging all major stakeholders to master the rules and regulations.

She added: “We should, therefore, maintain cordial working relationships to achieve a common goal.”

Kaduna-based legal practitioner, Sani Ndanusa Katy, SAN, speaking on behalf of the counsels said they will do everything within the law to support the tribunal to ensure the dispensation of Justice within the 180-day time limit.
So far, a total of 31 petitions have been filed in the state.
